May 5th Self Care Sunday

Whoever wishes to investigate medicine should proceed thus: In the first place, consider the seasons of the year and what effect each of them produces...Hippocrates

Self Care Sunday- Today I’m discussing 5 ways to begin new choices for ourselves. Honoring our bodies, treating ourselves with love & compassion are just the beginning. With the new moon upon us it’s the perfect time to let go & start new. Let’s try some new self care today. Yup, just one. You never know, what can happen! You “May” all of a sudden find yourself doing more then one!

Let’s discuss Ayurveda. It’s the sister science of yoga and one of the oldest existing systems of health. In Ayurveda, it's believed that all persons are made up of the same primary elements that exist in nature: fire, water, earth, air, and space. Ayurveda teaches us how to make choices that are ideal for our body and mind.

Below are 5 ways you can begin this age ole practice of self care ::

1. Oil pulling - Oil pulling is the practice of using sesame or coconut oil as a mouthwash, swishing it around in your mouth for anywhere from 10 to 20 minutes.

2. Use a tongue scraper- Using a tongue scraper first thing in the morning, before brushing your teeth, is considered an excellent way to remove toxins and bacteria that accumulate in the mouth while you sleep.

3. Self Massage- Abhyanga is a luxurious Ayurvedic ritual that involves self-massage with warm oil all over the body. It feels amazing & is relaxing as it sounds! It’s believed to nourish all parts of the body, enhance circulation, and stimulate the lymphatic system. Relax for about 10 minutes afterward to allow the oil to absorb into the skin prior to taking a bath or shower. It's both purifying and invigorating!

4. Rise Early- Preferably  before sun rises. Okay, some of us are not early risers. But, you can still live in your own rhythm. Find yours! However, our brains are the most active, & optimal energy is at best upon waking. Take time for sun salutations, meditation or other yoga asanas, a great way to start your day.

5. Eat Mindfully-Eating is an essential part of our lives. Give the same consideration as you give to other activities. Honor yourself, slow down, & honor the food your putting in your body.

Start small, choose one thing today. See what happens, who knows what direction this new moon will take you.
